Tax Deductions for Community Nurses and In-Home Care Workers

Many nurses, aged care workers, and healthcare professionals travel between patients’ homes, clinics, hospitals, and care facilities as part of their daily duties. Understanding what you can and cannot claim can help ensure you’re maximising your legitimate tax deductions while remaining compliant with Australian Taxation Office (ATO) requirements.

Can Nurses Claim Car Expenses?

The answer depends on the type of travel.

As a general rule, travel between your home and your regular workplace is considered private and is not deductible, even if you work shifts or carry some work items with you.

However, many community nurses and in-home care workers perform their duties across multiple locations, which can create deductible travel opportunities.

Travel Between Patients and Work Locations

You may be able to claim car expenses when travelling:

  • Between one patient’s home and another patient’s home

  • Between a clinic and a patient’s home

  • Between a hospital and an aged care facility

  • Between multiple workplaces on the same day

  • Between separate employers during the course of your workday

For example, if you visit six patients throughout the day and drive between each location, those kilometres are generally considered work-related travel and may be deductible.

Home to First Patient and Last Patient to Home

Many healthcare workers assume that travelling from home directly to their first patient and then home again after their final patient is automatically deductible.

In most cases, this travel is still considered private and is not deductible.

However, there are limited exceptions, particularly where you are carrying bulky equipment that is essential for your duties and cannot be securely stored elsewhere.

Because these situations depend heavily on individual circumstances, it is important to seek professional advice before claiming these trips.

Carrying Medical Equipment and Supplies

Some nurses and healthcare workers are required to transport significant equipment as part of their role.

Examples may include:

  • Large medical kits

  • Wound care equipment

  • Mobility assessment tools

  • Patient monitoring devices

  • Educational resources used during home visits

  • Temperature-controlled containers or eskies used for transporting medications or medical supplies

Where equipment is genuinely bulky, essential to the job, and there is no secure storage available at the workplace, the ATO may allow deductions for travel that would otherwise be private.

Simply choosing to carry equipment for convenience is generally not enough to qualify.

Choosing a Method to Claim Car Expenses

Cents per Kilometre Method

Many healthcare workers use the cents per kilometre method.

This method allows you to claim work-related kilometres without maintaining a full logbook. However, you must still be able to demonstrate how you calculated the kilometres claimed.

Examples of supporting records may include:

  • Diaries

  • Rosters

  • Appointment schedules

  • Electronic calendars

  • Mileage records

Logbook Method

If a significant amount of driving is undertaken throughout the year, the logbook method may provide a larger deduction.

This method allows you to claim the business-use percentage of:

  • Fuel

  • Registration

  • Insurance

  • Repairs and maintenance

  • Servicing

  • Depreciation or lease costs

A valid logbook and supporting records must be maintained.

Other Common Deductions for Nurses

In addition to travel expenses, many nurses and healthcare workers may also be able to claim:

Professional Registration

  • AHPRA registration fees

  • Endorsement fees

Union and Professional Memberships

  • Nursing union fees

  • Professional association memberships

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

  • Seminars

  • Conferences

  • Workshops

  • Online training courses

  • Professional subscriptions

Self-Education

Where a course directly relates to your current nursing role and helps maintain or improve your skills, expenses associated with further study may be deductible.

Examples include:

  • Graduate Certificates

  • Graduate Diplomas

  • Master’s degrees in Nursing

  • Clinical specialty qualifications

Uniforms and Protective Clothing

  • Occupation-specific uniforms

  • Scrubs (where eligible)

  • Protective footwear

  • Protective clothing and equipment

Mobile Phone and Internet

You may be able to claim the work-related portion of:

  • Mobile phone expenses

  • Internet costs

  • Data usage for work applications and patient management systems

Keep Good Records

The key to claiming deductions successfully is maintaining appropriate records.

Consider keeping:

  • Receipts and invoices

  • CPD certificates

  • Membership renewals

  • Vehicle records

  • Diaries and appointment schedules

  • Study-related documentation

Good record keeping not only supports your claim but can also make tax time significantly easier.
